CORONAVIRUS | A special flight carrying Malaysian nationals from Tehran, Iran, has arrived safely at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang early today.
According to Bernama, the AirAsia flight, specially chartered by the Malaysian government landed at 6.35am, according to the National Disaster Management Agency.
The Perikatan Nasional government announced yesterday it was repatriating over 1,500 Malaysian from India and Iran. Tho government was also in talks with Italy to try to bring home some 82 Malaysian stranded there in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak.
Italy is one of the worst-hit countries, with its death toll surpassing that of mainland China, where the coronavirus outbreak began.
Forty-six people, including children, who had registered with the Malaysian Embassy in Tehran, were brought home in the special flight which departed from Tehran last night.
Bernama reported that those brought home would undergo health screening at the Air Disaster Unit at KLIA, .
Yesterday, Deputy Foreign Minister Kamarudin Jaffar said the AirAsia flight had departed for Tehran to bring back Malaysian stranded in Iran as a result of high-level discussions undertaken between all governments concerned in a spirit of Asean togetherness.
Meanwhile, in a statement received Sunday afternoon, Kamarudin said another 212 Malaysians who were stranded in Tashkent, Uzbekistan have also safely returned to the country last night.
He said the group was brought back to Malaysia in a flight sponsored by the Uzbekistan government, and arrived at KLIA about 9pm Saturday.
"The same aircraft was used to bring back about 200 Uzbekistan nationals who were stranded in Malaysia, where they departed KLIA at about 11.30pm under the coordination of the Uzbekistan embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
"The government would like to record our appreciation and gratefulness to the Uzbekistan government for this initiative and assistance in bringing back our citizens," he said in the statement.
