CORONAVIRUS | A total of 5,835 people were charged for violating the movement control order (MCO) from March 18 to April 14.
Bukit Aman CID director Huzir Mohamed (above), who shared the figure in a media conference today, said throughout the first and second phase of MCO, the police have arrested 14,922 errant individuals.
"In the first phase of the MCO which began from March 18 to March 31, the police arrested 3,627 people.
"In the second phase from April 1 to April 14, the police arrested another 11,295 people," he told reporters at Bukit Aman.
On April 11, Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob cautioned that those who are caught violating the MCO will be arrested and charged in court instead of having a compound notice issued against them.
Huzir reiterated the same warning to the public.
"From today onwards, no compound will be issued during phase 3. We will instead open an investigation paper and send it to the prosecutors for a charge.
"Why? Because we found that there are still people who violate the MCO," he said.
Huzir added that previously, there were six individuals who were caught twice for breaking the order.
"The MCO guideline is very clear. Those (working in service) listed under the MCO are allowed to go out. They are those who have permission and (their services) listed as essential.
"Other than that, they have to get permission and upon discretion from their respective police station chiefs," he said.
The third phase of MCO, which began today, is expected to be lifted on April 28.
