Muhyiddin loyalists say Dr M's no-confidence motion bad for rakyat

Bersatu leaders loyal to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin say that Dr Mahathir Mohamad's no-confidence motion against the former in Parliament will have a broad negative impact on the country and the rakyat.

"This motion was submitted without due consideration on its impact on the country, the rakyat, the economy, investments, healthcare and public confidence," Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof told Malaysiakini.

Mahathir, who is the Bersatu chairperson-elect, had submitted a motion of no- confidence against Muhyiddin which had been approved by Dewan Rakyat speaker Mohamad Ariff Mohd Yusof.

It is yet unclear whether the showdown will happen during the May 18 Parliament sitting but anticipation for the battle is running high.

Meanwhile, Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu, who is also Tambun MP, said that he, too, opposes the no-confidence motion.

"I can't support the motion and I believe the people want to give Muhyiddin a chance to drive Malaysia towards a mutually beneficial future.

"I am with the people," Faizal told Malaysiakini.

The clash between Mahathir and Muhyiddin stems from the political crisis in late February after the latter pulled Bersatu out of Pakatan Harapan.

Mahathir's son Mukhriz, who is challenging Muhyiddin for the party presidency, has urged the party to rejoin Bersatu.

Mahathir himself said that if Bersatu does not change course, it will be destroyed in the next general election citing lack of support from both Harapan and Muhyiddin's current ally Umno.
