Two Kedah PKR assemblypersons are set to make announcements that could have immediate ramifications on the future of the state government helmed by Bersatu's Mukhriz Mahathir.
The pair - Sidam representative Dr Robert Ling Kui Ee and Lunas representative Azman Nasrudin - issued an invitation this morning about a “special press conference” at noon.
An aide to Ling told Malaysiakini that the event will be about their “status in the state government”.
Meanwhile, Perikatan Nasional Kedah has also announced that they will be holding a “special press conference” at 3pm today.
A media alert about the event states that it will take place at Kedah PAS’ headquarters.
At present, Mukhriz has a precarious two-seat hold over the state, with 19 seats to Umno and PAS’ 17 seats. More than one defection will result in a collapse of the government.
Last week, Kedah PAS chief Ahmad Yahaya claimed that Ling’s allegiance to Mukriz and Pakatan Harapan was in doubt.
Ahmad also claimed that PAS was poised to take over the state government.
Mukhriz, who is also Bersatu deputy president, has maintained the Harapan government in Kedah even though party president Muhyiddin Yassin had taken Bersatu out of the coalition to form Perikatan Nasional with BN, PAS, GPS and other minor parties.
Mukhriz is challenging Muhyiddin for the presidency in the upcoming party polls.
Back in 2016 when he was the Kedah Menteri Besar leading the BN state government, Mukhriz was ousted through a no-confidence vote by fellow Umno assemblypersons.
This was widely seen as a result of his and his father Dr Mahathir Mohamad's criticisms about the Najib administration and 1MDB scandal.
Mahathir, Mukhriz and Muhyiddin, also a Najib-critic, were later expelled from Umno and went on to form Bersatu together.
