The government has taken note of the issues faced by visitors whose social visit pass expired during the movement control order (MCO) period which started on March 18, said Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Ismail, who is also the senior minister in charge of the MCO, said visitors whose social visit pass expired during the MCO could have them extended.
"For foreigners whose social visit pass expired during the MCO, they can go to the nearest Immigration Department to extend the pass," he said in a statement today.
The announcement came following the death of Indian tourist Zeawdeen Kadar Masdan (above), who was treated as an undocumented migrant after his social visit pass expired during the MCO period.
The Indian national was sent to the Bukit Jalil immigration detention depot where he later contracted Covid-19 and died.
The MCO saw a partial lockdown of the country in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Among the measures included the suspension of air travel which left tourists stranded.
The partial lockdown was gradually relaxed and beginning June 10, most sectors were reopened under a recovery MCO.
Ismail said for visitors whose social visit pass expired during the recovery MCO period, they would be given 14 days from the expiry date to leave the country.
