CORONAVIRUS | Tahfiz schools and tuition centres can reopen on the same date national schools resume normal operations, said Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

He said the decision was made by the government today.

"The date will be on the same date when (national) schools resume operations.

"If the schools are allowed to reopen, then tahfiz and madrasah can reopen on the same day.

"I believe the Education Ministry will announce the date for school sessions (to begin) for the rest of the students other than those taking SPM and STPM," he said.

Ismail also announced that schools for special need students and private education institutions have been given the green light to reopen.

He added that standard operating procedures (SOPs) for schools will be issued by the Education Ministry, and religious institutions can adopt them.

This includes guidelines for boarding schools and there will also be SOPs for tuition centres and the others.

While the permission only applies to tahfiz and madrasah that are registered with authorities, Ismail said the unregistered ones can apply with their respective state religious authorities.

On a related matter, Ismail announced that Friday prayers will be opened to foreigners. However, it will start with diplomats and staff of foreign missions first.

"As I have said, we are going to go further in relaxing the rules but it will be done in stages.

"So, foreigners beginning with ambassadors and diplomatic staff are allowed to join Friday prayers at mosques starting July 3," he added.

The government is also allowing foreign missions with a surau used for Friday prayers before the MCO to resume doing so.

Mosques are also allowed to use its compound for Friday prayers, with the condition that social distancing is practised, Ismail added.
