Time for a domestic tourism boom, says Nancy
The gradual lifting of controls on domestic travel while international restrictions still apply means that the time is right for a boost in domestic tourism, said Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Nancy Shukri.
As such, Nancy (above) called on state authorities, local councils and community leaders to help boost domestic tourism and expose would-be travellers to “hidden gems and untold stories”.

As such, Nancy (above) called on state authorities, local councils and community leaders to help boost domestic tourism and expose would-be travellers to “hidden gems and untold stories”.
“No one knows these stories more than the respective communities. Many know of the main attractions the country has to offer but there is still so much more to see and experience," said Nancy, according to a report in Free Malaysia Today.
She said that Malaysians were blessed to live in such a diverse nation, rich in cultural traditions, history and biodiversity.
"Behind all of this is a story just waiting to be told,” she said following a dialogue with bloggers and social media influencers.
Under the recovery movement control order (MCO), domestic travel restrictions have gradually been relaxed while international travel is much more limited.
The local tourism industry has been hit hard by low occupancy rates at hotels with a number of hotels announcing their closure.
Nancy said that her ministry was looking at how it could facilitate the process of sharing these local stories and that local champions who are immersed in the knowledge of their communities would be a resource to media outlets, travel magazines, bloggers, social media influencers and interest groups.
“They can tell the stories, traditions and practices in the area because ultimately that is what people want to learn and experience.
“These are people with hundreds and thousands of active followers and readers who are themselves looking for new experiences,” she added, saying that now was the best time to leverage advantages to save the tourism industry and the millions of Malaysians who depend on it for a living.
