Telcos hit with compounds totalling RM4.6m for standards non-compliance
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today revealed it has issued 92 compounds totalling RM4.6 million against telecommunication companies in the first two quarters of 2020.
This greatly surpassed the number and total value of compounds issued by the commission against telcos for the whole of 2019, which stood at just RM960,000 for 26 compounds.

This greatly surpassed the number and total value of compounds issued by the commission against telcos for the whole of 2019, which stood at just RM960,000 for 26 compounds.
In a statement, MCMC said the compounds were for various violations under Section 105(3) of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1988, in regards to non-compliance with the mandatory standards for service quality (MSQoS).
“All the compounds issued covered violations concerning their performance on handling solutions for billing complaints, non-billing complaints and handling of customers’ hotline calls,” the statement read.
Of the five telcos involved, it was revealed that Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd received the highest compound for this year, amounting to RM1.55 million for 31 compounds, followed by Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd with RM1.4 million (28 compounds) and Celcom Axiata Berhad with RM1.2 million (24).
The other two companies are TT dotCom Sdn Bhd with RM250,000 for five compounds and Telekom Malaysia Bhd with RM200,000 for four compounds.
MCMC said each offence under Section 105(3) of the CMA is liable to a maximum fine of RM100,000.
