PN faces criticism over choice of Shabudin as deputy minister
The Perikatan Nasional (PN) government has come under criticism over its choice of Bersatu's Tasek Gelugor MP Shabudin Yahaya as a deputy minister.
Lawyer Haniff Khatri, who has represented former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said his appointment came amid an ongoing suit by the Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda) against Shabudin (above), who was its former chairperson.

Lawyer Haniff Khatri, who has represented former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said his appointment came amid an ongoing suit by the Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda) against Shabudin (above), who was its former chairperson.
Haniff said the appointment "called into question whether Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has cast away the principles of good governance and integrity".
"Shabudin, together with other previous members of the Perda board, is still facing legal suits in the Penang High Court brought by Perda against them on breach of fiduciaries and misfeasance filed on Feb 13 and 14, 2019," he said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Seri Delima assemblyperson Syerleena Abdul Rashid (below) said the choice of Shabudin was disappointing, highlighting his previous comments about rape in the Dewan Rakyat.
The DAP lawmaker noted that Shabudin had in 2017 suggested that a woman marry her rapist so she could have a better life.
He had suggested that this could be a remedy to social problems as she would, at least, have a husband.
"Such a statement does not inspire confidence among women," she said in a separate statement.
"I would like to ask PN MPs, particularly women elected representatives. Do you not feel anything about the appointment?
"Are our daughters safer with a deputy law minister with such a mentality?" she said.
Earlier today, the Prime Minister's Department announced Shabudin would be appointed as a deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of law.
Shabudin replaces Kuala Pilah MP Eddin Syazlee Shith who will be taking over the deputy works minister's post vacated by Sri Gading MP Shahruddin Md Salleh.
