Teluk Intan MP Nga Kor Ming has resigned as the deputy speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, in solidarity with the newly-ousted speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof.

This is just ahead of the motion to remove Nga as the deputy speaker, which was supposed to be tabled after the lunch break, which will end at 2.30pm.

“I am resigning from my position with immediate effect... I am willing to do so, in solidarity with Ariff.

“We bow out in honour. That is the right thing to do. I do not want to serve a government without a mandate from the people,” Nga said in a press conference with Ariff in Parliament today.

He said he had decided he would step down as deputy speaker if Ariff was removed as the speaker.

“We were elected by the House and we should be removed by the House,” Nga said.

He said the two of them will always be remembered as a speaker and deputy speaker who had uplifted the image of the Dewan Rakyat as well as defended the sovereignty of the law.

Earlier in the proceedings today, a motion to remove Ariff as the speaker was approved with 111 votes in favour and 109 votes against it, with one MP not in attendance.
