In a bid to stimulate the Covid-19-stricken economy, the government has allocated RM20 million in taxpayer funds for a campaign encouraging consumption of Malaysian-made goods.

The campaign - called “Kempen Beli Barangan Malaysia 2020” - is part of the national economic recovery plan (Penjana).

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin launched the campaign at the Petronas philharmonic hall and the Suria KLCC shopping mall this morning.

“To ensure the campaign has a big impact on the domestic retail sector, the government through Penjana has allocated RM20 million to ensure its success by prioritising the use of local goods and services.

“This will encourage the tagging of locally manufactured goods at supermarkets and provide a specific channel for Malaysian products on major e-commerce platforms,” he said during his speech.

Campaign initiatives include a nationwide roadshow, online trade fairs, online business-matching, capacity-building incentives for local businesses, priority for local products in government procurement, international trade fairs, and e-commerce training programmes.

Elaborating, Muhyiddin said the government would also be “revising” existing policies to ensure less reliance on imports to encourage local industries to produce their own products.

This, he said, would help reduce capital outflows and enable more Malaysian-made goods to be exported.

“Malaysia needs to have the capacity to produce critical products including for the food and beverage industry, medical devices, medicines, petrochemicals, and personal protective equipment like gloves and face masks,” he added.

The campaign is led by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry in partnership with the International Trade and Industry Ministry, the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, and other ministries.

Among those in attendance today were Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi, Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa, Federal Territories Deputy Minister Edmund Santhara, and IGP Abdul Hamid Bador.
