The Malacca-Johor Diocese (MJD) has cancelled all masses in the two states with immediate effect due to Covid-19 fears.
According to an announcement on Facebook, this is due to a clergyperson being tested positive for the disease on July 25 in Bukit Tiram in Johor.
“This is due to the fact that all our MJD clergy have been exposed to the clergyperson from Bukit Tiram on July 15, during our clergy monthly recollective.
“All masses are to be cancelled until all the contract tracings are completed… (and until further notice),” MJD Bishop Bernard Paul (below) said in a statement dated July 25, which was uploaded on the MJD Facebook page yesterday.
The Bukit Tiram cluster was identified as a new cluster on Saturday, after two individuals who live and work at a religious centre in the Johor district tested positive.
They had both started showing symptoms on July 15 but only got screened on July 24.
Seven more cases linked to the cluster were detected yesterday.
Due to this, a school in the vicinity, SK Taman Bukit Tiram, has mandated that all students adorn face masks as a protective measure.
This is despite there currently being no rule enforcing the mandatory use of face masks in schools.
The school also encouraged students to bring their own food and utensils and limit their movements and the sharing of stationeries.
From Aug 1, the government has made it compulsory for face masks to be worn aboard all public transportation and in crowded public places.
The country has begun showing an uptick in coronavirus cases of late, with the authorities reporting reduced compliance with the recovery movement control order (RMCO) standard operating procedures by the public.
This especially includes the use of the face mask and social distancing measures.
