CORONAVIRUS | A Johor school in the vicinity of a new Covid-19 cluster announced that it will mandate the wearing of a face mask for all students.
SK Taman Bukit Tiram, in a Facebook announcement, urged parents to ensure their children have a face mask which must be put on at all times while in school.
The government's current standard operating procedure does not make face masks mandatory for all students in school.
The school's own initiative to mandate face masks comes after the Health Ministry yesterday revealed the Bukit Tiram cluster involving two Covid-19 patients.
The recorded cases there have since grown to nine in just a day.
The epicentre of this cluster is a religious centre where two non-citizens (Case 8,868 and Case 8,869) working there were tested positive for Covid-19.
Both of them started to exhibit symptoms on July 15 but did not seek immediate medical attention.
They were only tested for Covid-19 on July 24 and the results returned positive.
The Health Ministry on July 25 said it initiated active case detection involving the two cases and have screened 10 of their close contacts.
Today, the Health Ministry announced another seven cases in the Bukit Tiram cluster, bringing the total cases to nine.
SK Taman Bukit Tiram, in its announcement, also encouraged students to bring their own food and utensils and limit their movement or sharing stationery.
It also advised parents not to bring their children to places such as malls where there is a higher risk to become infected with Covid-19.
"If children have any symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, difficult breathing, sore threat - do not attend school," it said.
It added that parents may also choose not to send children to school but this must come with a letter of consent.
