PARLIAMENT | The Perikatan Nasional (PN) government has abandoned plans by the previous Pakatan Harapan administration to abolish the University and University Colleges Act (UUCA) by this year.
In a written reply yesterday to former education minister Maszlee Malik (IND-Simpang Renggam), the Higher Education Ministry said the act was still relevant.
"The minister is of the view that the Act is still relevant in enforcing its functions. As such, the ministry does not plan to abolish it in the near future," it said.
Previously under Maszlee, the government had amended the UUCA to allow students to take part in political party activities within the grounds of their universities and colleges.
This was a first step towards repealing the Act altogether and replacing it with a new more comprehensive law in 2020.
These plans were still on the table after Maszlee (below) resigned and Dr Mahathir Mohamad took over as acting education minister.

Meanwhile, in a separate written reply, the Education Ministry said it had not received the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) task force's report for it to review.
Last week, the task force's chairperson Eddin Khoo said he was waiting for the right time to table the report.
The task force, he said, had to keep on postponing its plan to submit it after several events affecting the country took place.
This included the resignation of former education minister Maszlee Malik, Dr Mahathir Mohamad taking over as the interim education minister, PN coming into federal power and the Covid-19 pandemic which halted almost all activities, Khoo added.
The UEC task force was set up in October 2018 by the Harapan government which pledged to recognise the education certificate in its 2018 election manifesto.
