CORONAVIRUS | As Muslims prepare for Hari Raya Aidiladha celebrations tomorrow, Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah reminded Malaysians that they share a social responsibility in preventing the spread of Covid-19 during the festivities.
“As with other festivals of late during the Covid-19 pandemic, it would have to be celebrated differently compared to previous years,” he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.
He said the government has taken various means to help ensure Muslims will be able to celebrate the occasion in a safer environment and urged members of the public to adhere to its standard operating procedures.
The wearing of face masks is highly encouraged in crowded places especially when social distancing is difficult to put into practice.
“That being said, all three measures of social distancing, hand hygiene, and the wearing of face masks are extremely important and should always be put into practice.
Noor Hisham also urged Malaysians to be careful on the roads and to obey instructions from the relevant authorities.
The SOPs should be adhered to when taking breaks at the R&R areas or when taking public transport.
“This is a social responsibility that should be fulfilled together by every stratum of society.
“With public cooperation, we can prevent the spread of Covid-19 during this celebration,” he said.
For the record, all government-mandated social distancing guidelines are available from the National Security Council’s website.
This includes guidelines for Aidiladha celebrations and a separate set of guidelines for animal sacrifices that would take place during the celebrations.
The guidelines prohibit gatherings of more than 20 people at any given time.
Beginning Aug 1, the wearing of face masks in crowded places will be made mandatory.
Violation of the guidelines or the mask mandate is punishable under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.
