Umno did not consult PAS before shunning PN

Takiyuddin said his party was waiting for Umno's invitation to discuss the matter further.
On Thursday, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi made a sudden announcement that his party was no longer pursuing formal ties with PN, but still wanted to remain part of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's government.
Zahid (below) said the party will instead focus on forging ties with PAS through Muafakat Nasional.
The timing of Zahid's announcement had led to speculation that it was a knee-jerk reaction to the High Court's decision to convict former Umno president Najib Abdul Razak for pocketing RM42 million from a state-owned company between 2014 and 2015.
PN remains an informal name for Muhyiddin's government, with the support of 113 of 222 MPs in Parliament.
On June 30, the leadership of Bersatu, which Muhyiddin leads, held a meeting with their PAS and Umno counterparts.
Among other topics, the three parties were looking at whether PN should be formalised. No decision on the matter was made at the time.
The following day, leaders representing 12 parties held a meeting with Muhyiddin to reiterate their support, but no mention was made of formalising the coalition.
Zahid, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan and the party's former secretary-general Tengku Adnan Mansor, are facing criminal trials.
Meanwhile, Takiyuddin reiterated PAS' support for Muhyiddin's government, at least until the 15th general election is called.
Takiyuddin said his party will not renege on previous agreements.
"Based on the agreement and the fact that we are an Islamic party that sticks to our promises, currently we are with PN. It is our responsibility to strengthen and defend this government," he added.
