96.25pct turnout at early voting in Slim by-election
SLIM POLLS | The early polling centre for the Slim state by-election at the Muallim district police headquarters (IPD) near here opened at 8am today to allow 267 police personnel to cast their votes.
The centre will remain open until 5.30pm today....
SLIM POLLS | A total of 96.25 percent of the 267 early voters comprising police personnel cast their ballots in the Slim state by-election early voting today, the Election Commission (EC) said.
The early voting, from 8am to 5.30pm, was held at the Muallim district police headquarters (IPD) in Slim River.
The process was witnessed by agents of the candidates as well as election observers appointed by the EC.
Ballot boxes for early voting would be stored at the Muallim IPD lock-up and vote tallying would be conducted on polling day this Saturday at the vote-counting centre at the Tanjung Malim District Council.
EC chairperson Abdul Ghani Salleh, his deputy Azmi Sharom and Perak police chief Razarudin Husain were at the polling centre to observe proceedings this morning.
BN candidate Mohd Zaidi Aziz (below) and independent candidate Amir Khusyairi Mohamad Tanusi were also present at the polling centre.
Both candidates, when met by reporters, said they were satisfied with the early voting process which proceeded smoothly under the new normal adopted in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The by-election is a three-cornered fight between Zaidi and two independents - Amir, who is backed by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's Pejuang, and former teacher S Santharasekaran.
A total of 23,094 voters are eligible to vote in the by-election.
The by-election was called following the death of BN's four-term incumbent Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib from a heart attack on July 15.
