Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari has apologised over a photograph showing a water tanker at his residence, which went viral on social media.
Amirudin said his wife, Masdiana Muhammad, had posted the photo online to show her appreciation for Air Selangor.
“Certain quarters have used this photograph to attack me. However, my wife and I wish to apologise,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.
Netizens have been venting their frustration over how certain VIPs were accorded special treatment when the state is facing a water shortage due to pollution.
Apart from the water tanker, there was also a screen capture from Masdiana's Instagram account which was circulated showing one of her children in a swimming pool, with the caption “bila air takde" (when there is no water).
Masdiana later denied that the water tanker was despatched to their house to fill up the swimming pool.
Apologising for the “mistake”, she promised to help residents whose water supply has not been restored.
Earlier today, Air Selangor said water supply has been restored to 73 percent of the 1,292 areas in the Klang Valley affected by the disruption.
However, a handful of areas where supply was supposed to be restored by today are facing delays due to consumers continuing to store water excessively even though supply has been reconnected in their areas.
The 1,292 areas across eight districts were affected since Thursday when four water treatment plants ceased operation after pollutants were detected in a river.
The affected water treatment plants were the Sungai Selangor Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3 treatment plants, and the Rantau Panjang plant.
The water cut involved nearly 1.2 million consumer accounts.
Authorities have since shut down a factory in Rawang, which they suspect was responsible for the pollution, and arrested four men.
The pollutants were released into Sungai Gong, which flows into Sungai Sembah and in turn feeds into Sungai Selangor.
