A day after announcing his departure from Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s party, Pejuang, Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik said he still holds Mahathir in high esteem.
He said he hopes there will be no ill will between him and Mahathir despite parting ways, and that Mahathir will continue his struggle.
“My disagreements in future political direction has never diminished my feelings of respect and reverence to this great figure.
“In the rise and fall of the nation, from a desolate desert to the tallest twin towers in the world, this figure is there, watching and carefully writing the history of its people’s rise and fall.
“Although our platforms and political beliefs are different, there are always figures who deserve our respect for their great contribution to us and to the country,” he posted on Facebook today.
The former education minister thanked Mahathir for entrusting him with the cabinet post for 20 months, which he said has opened his eyes and strengthened his resolve to improve education.
Describing the campaign to improve education as a religious duty (fardhu), he said: “This fardhu cannot stop, no matter who I am, where I am.”
Previously, Maszlee had said he would continue his efforts for education reform as an independent MP by networking with NGOs and activists.
He said the people have grown nauseous with politicians’ “game of power” and is in need of politicians who can focus on the problems they face.
“My new struggle has already begun. My focus apart from Simpang Renggam is to start a movement for large-scale education changes that make it possible for anyone to make a change.
“(This is) because I believe the future of the nation depends on its education. If education fails, the future is ruined,” he said today.
