Perikatan Nasional to set up presidential council

Perikatan Nasional (PN) has agreed on the formation of a Presidential Council as a platform to discuss government policies and strengthen ties among parties within the government.

This was informed by PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin in a statement today.

The decision followed a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday.

The meeting was joined by other PN leaders including Abdul Hadi Awang, Jeffrey G Kitingan, Yong Teck Lee, and Ahmad Faizal Azumu, among others.

In the statement, Hamzah said the meeting also discussed preparations for the next general election (GE).

Muhyiddin had said that GE15 would be held once the Covid-19 pandemic was over.

This was agreed by Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan who stressed that the slim majority held by the PN federal government was bad for an administration.

Muhyiddin announced establishing a presidential council during the 3rd Bersatu annual general assembly last week.

"Periodical meetings can be held to discuss matters related to economy, education, and social policies.

"This is important because not all party chiefs are in the cabinet.

"Through these meetings, each party chief can voice out the views of their respective parties on the primary government policies for the attention of the cabinet in making a decision," Muhyiddin said.
