MP calls on govt to prioritise probe into Adib's death

PARLIAMENT | The government has been urged to prioritise investigations into the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim on Dec 17, 2018, over other matters debated in the final two days of this current parliament sitting.
RSN Rayer (Harapan-Bukit Jelutong) said the matter should be expedited as the people have high hopes for the government to charge the individuals accused of causing Adib's death.
"In this current session, there are many unresolved matters, issues that I often raised like where Jho Low is? Also, the unresolved case of Muhammad Adib.
"All these matters are unresolved, so why are we (instead) making these amendments?" he said.
"I ask for us to focus on resolving these matters rather than proceeding with these amendments," said Rayer who stood up to interject during committee stage debates on the Customs Bill (Amendment) 2020.
Arau MP Shahidan Kassim, however, shot down Rayer's remarks and stressed the PN government's commitment to fighting for justice in Adib's case.
"These amendments are needed, even though there are those who said it is unnecessary because priority must be given to Jho Low, Adib and others.
"Adib is our struggle, friends in PN [...] I am grateful that the home minister has taken action to try and conclude investigations in the case," he said.
"Those over there (opposition) are just talking to try to be a hero. There is no need to act like a hero when we have done the work.
"Do not take the opportunity to be seen as if you have been fighting, when actually you did nothing," Shahidan said.
On Monday, Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin, in response to Rayer, said police had on July 23, upon completing their latest investigation Adib's death, submitted a recommendation to the Attorney-General's Chambers for a fresh inquest to be held.
He said the police force also recommended that 12 suspects in the case be charged under section 143 of the Penal Code which covers unlawful assembly.
Coroner Rofiah Mohamad who presided over the first inquest into Adib's death had in her judgment concluded that the blunt chest trauma sustained during the incident was not self-inflicted or an accident, but was caused by two to three unidentified persons who pulled the victim out of the emergency services (EMRS) van he was in, hitting him and dragging him.
