Umno advisory board chairperson Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said he was ashamed with party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s move to join the Perikatan Nasional Presidential Council.
He said Umno is not a PN component party.
The Gua Musang MP said this when asked what should be Umno’s next move after the government successfully passed the 2021 Budget, adding that Zahid’s move was “very strange”.
“I don’t know (what is Zahid’s next move). I think you need to ask Zahid as president to give a clearer answer to this question.
“That’s because he has agreed to be a PN Presidential Council member. I’m quite ashamed and I view it as very strange from him to accept (becoming a member) in the presidential council since Umno is not a PN member.
“[…] Where is Umno coming from? Umno is not at all involved (in this),” he told a forum hosted by the National Professors Council in Kajang today.
PN is a political collaboration initiated to overthrow Pakatan Harapan in February via Sheraton Move. It started off after Bersatu and a group of PKR leaders left Harapan to cooperate with PAS, BN, GPS, PBS and Star.
Currently, PN is officially made up of PAS, Bersatu, Star and SAPP, while BN had said it will only support but not be joining the ruling coalition.
Last week, PN parties, BN and GPS agreed to set up a presidential council comprises leaders of each party.
When asked which one is more suitable for Umno between Muafakat Nasional and PN, Tengku Razaleigh said he was confused with the current situation.
He, however, said Bersatu is a party that stole many Umno members and this is not something that can be forgiven easily.
"(We) cannot equate BN with Bersatu. Bersatu exists because it stole people from Umno. This is not something we can forgive. Morally, Bersatu is not right.
"Its strength came from stealing. Many of its leaders who become ministers are stolen from Umno.
"To make us kneel to them? No way. Where is our dignity?” he asked, adding that PAS had already decided not to work with its splinter party Amanah.
The way Tengku Razaleigh looked at it, Umno should regain power by restructuring the party agenda, which includes setting up an agenda that will involve youth.
He believed Umno could form a collaboration with productive groups that are not "anti-anyone" and can be expected to devote its time for community development.
