In a moving post on social media, Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has lamented the rapid increase in the rate of Covid-19 fatalities since the turn of the year.
"For the first 9 months of 2020, the total number of deaths was less than 100 cases.
"This year in 9 days, we have recorded 71 cases of Covid-19 deaths.
"We are very worried about this development and may Allah SWT protect us all. #Kitajagakita," tweeted Noor Hisham.
The tweet was accompanied by sombre pictures of frontliners in protective suits surrounding deceased patients in body bags.
In recent weeks the number of new cases has soared with the Health Ministry reporting a record high of 3,027 new Covid-19 cases on Jan 7, while the 16 fatalities reported on Jan 8 was also the highest figure for a single day.
Overall the figures stand at 133,253 cases with 25,879 currently undergoing treatment and 177 of them in the ICU units.
A total of 106,832 patients have been discharged, while the number of fatalities is 542.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said on Friday that Malaysia has targeted to achieve herd immunity against Covid-19 in mid-2022.
More than 90 million cases have been reported globally, with at least 1.93million having lost their lives.
