A Bersatu-Umno-PAS government is a recipe for disaster because their agendas diverge too drastically, said former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The Langkawi MP told FMT that the current alliance between the three was merely for political convenience.
He also believed that playing up the 'Malay-Muslim' element was all for show as the administration of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was still reliant on non-Malay support to stay in power.
“Umno and PAS have never been friendly,” he said. “PAS has condemned Umno as an infidel, kafir. So how can they work together when PAS says working with the kafir will make you a kafir?”
“It’s not good for the country because nobody has a proper, united view of how to develop the country, how to run the country.
“It will be a disaster if these people were to form a government because each will be pulling in its own way.”
Mahathir, who served two separate terms as prime minister, predicted that seat negotiations between the parties to contest in the 15th general election (GE15) would be harsh.
He also said he didn’t believe grassroots supporters would back the idea.
“On the ground, the people themselves will not cooperate. They will not support it.”
143 of Umno’s 191 divisions have passed resolutions, telling the party leadership to quit working with Bersatu before GE15.
Mahathir said the Malay-Muslim narrative had been used to convince Malays that the government would benefit them exclusively and allow them to control the country.
But once they formed the government, they realised they could not form a totally Malay-Muslim government and were now reliant on non-Malay MPs to hold on to power.
“So, it is not a Malay-Muslim government. That is simply talk in order to hoodwink the Malays into thinking they are going to control the country through their own government.”
Mahathir claimed the only Malays benefiting from the government were members of the current administration.
“All we are hearing is bad news about cronyism, about giving contracts to people,” he said.
“That is not favouring the Malays at all. We don’t see any other Malay benefiting from the administration of this government.”
