Annuar claims dissent at Umno AGM suppressed, warns party could sink
Umno's Ketereh MP Annuar Musa, the party's most vocal pro-Perikatan Nasional (PN) leader, claimed the party's leadership was suppressing dissenting opinions in the two-day Umno general assembly, which began today.
He claimed the party had replaced all speakers with those approved by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who has been pushing to sever ties with Bersatu and PN in the next general election.
Umno's Ketereh MP Annuar Musa, the party's most vocal pro-Perikatan Nasional (PN) leader, claimed the party's leadership was suppressing dissenting opinions in the two-day Umno general assembly, which began today.
He claimed the party had replaced all speakers with those approved by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who has been pushing to sever ties with Bersatu and PN in the next general election.
"Nominated speakers were scrapped and replaced. Only people appointed by the president can speak," he said in a statement.
Annuar (photo, above) added that the debate on the motion to approve the president's policy speech has also been limited to supreme council leaders only.
He likened it to the Umno supreme council approving its own decision. "There can be no deviation," he said.
Annuar's claim came amid a divide in the party on whether Umno and Bersatu should part ways in the next general election.
The Umno supreme council earlier this month informed Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also the Bersatu president, about the decision to cut ties. Annuar is among dissenters.
Annuar said he and other senior Umno leaders in government have also had to endure an online campaign against them for having a different opinion.
He said other leaders who have become "victims" are Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Hishammuddin Hussein, Shahidan Kassim and Noraini Ahmad.
"The politics of hatred has seeped in to become a new party trademark," he said.
However, Annuar said he has not wavered from his position that Umno should remain with the PN in the name of Malay unity.
He also reiterated that Umno must not cooperate with PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and DAP.
"If Umno gets the wrong leaders or chooses the wrong formula for victory, then Umno will be sidelined, making the party's revival difficult.
"Umno may even sink from mainstream politics. It is up to the Umno annual general assembly to decide - but all have been pre-determined. Just accept it," he said.
The Umno AGM this weekend is for 2020, which was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Umno is expected to hold its AGM for 2021 later this year, which is expected to see party elections.
