UMNO AGM | Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan urged his party to emulate English football club Liverpool in order to make a political comeback in the next general election (GE).

Liverpool was crowned champion of the Premier League last year, the first time it won the top English men's professional football league in 30 years, beating Manchester City, Manchester United, and Chelsea.

He described the next GE as a battle for the survival of the Malay-based party with 75 years of history.

Taking his football analogy further, Liverpool-fan Mohamad (photo, above) said Umno is not a reserve player and needed to be at the helm of the government by being the leader in any political partnership.

"Any party that wants to work with us must have confidence in Umno as the main captain on a boat, not the reserve player.

"We don't want to be the reserve players, we want to be Liverpool that won the English Premier League.

"You'll never walk alone," Mohamad said, invoking Liverpool's slogan. He was speaking during the launch of the annual general assembly for Umno's Youth, Women, and Young Women wings.

He also stressed that no party or individual could give instructions to Umno on whom it chooses to discuss with to form the government.

Let Umno choose, he said, to show its true strength as a party without sacrificing its strategic interest.

By wanting to choose who to work with, he said the party is not "bragging" and saying it is the smartest and "knows it all". However, he said the party will not "gamble" on the seats that it would contest in the next GE.

"Umno will not gamble on any of this. These are Umno seats, be it in the past, now, or in the future. These (seats) are not for us to let go, in order to give a lifeline to any quarter," he said.

The Umno assembly, initially slated to be held last December, has been postponed to this weekend due to Covid-19.

The assembly began this morning, drawing the nation's attention as to whether Umno would finally make a decision to officially sever its ties with Bersatu.
