UMNO AGM | Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan has warned the other "Malay splinter party" not to try to teach Umno how to unite the Malays.
Mohamad (photo, above) said Umno has long championed the interests of Malays, and no one should question the party's commitment to the ummah.
"Umno has long pioneered the unity of Malay, so don't lecture us on how to do it," he told party delegates when launching the party wings' annual assembly 2020.
The Umno assembly, initially slated to be held last December, has been postponed to this weekend due to Covid-19.
"The term of unity of ummah has been trending lately. Everyone speaks about it as though the ummah is severely divided," he said.
"But I have a different view. For me, the status of Malay unity is not so acute. Just that there are little issues, but this is normal. Overall, the unity of Malay is getting stronger," he said.
He said this in an apparent reference to Bersatu, which he described as an inexperienced party (setahun jagung).
"To the leaders of the inexperienced splinter party, please don't talk about the unity of the ummah with us (Umno) when you don't have any track record in uniting Malay and Malaysians.
"Do not talk about the unity of the ummah with Umno if you are now fighting those you are previously close to and when you are enticing those that had abandoned the Malay struggle to join you.
Mohamad also described Bersatu as an anti-Malay unity which only raised the unity issue when it was threatened.
"It is even more disgusting than when they left PKR; there was no mention of the ummah unity," he said.
"Umno will not be prostituting ourselves for narrow political goals, and we will not be impacted in the unintelligent political race," he said.
Mohamad said Umno fought for the unity of the nation, not just the unity of ummah, for the sake of a better future for Malaysia.
Bersatu, along with PAS, has tried to convince Umno to come under Perikatan Nasional's banner on the premise that it will benefit the unity of the ummah.
However, Umno is bent on ditching PN in the next general election and will use the BN banner.
The Umno wings' annual general assembly today saw the Malay-based party pointing its gun at Bersatu as Umno will decide tomorrow whether to sever ties with Bersatu.
