MIC Youth today urged Putrajaya to establish a special independent commission to probe into the case of A Ganapathy, who died while in police custody.
The wing’s secretary G Theeageesh said this was necessary in view of the autopsy report claiming that the cause of death was serious injuries to his legs and shoulder.
“MIC Youth depends on Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin to establish a special commission under the Home Ministry to immediately investigate the matter thoroughly.
“We hope that the commission can get to the bottom of Ganapathy’s case and other death in custody cases,” he told reporters in Putrajaya.
These demands were detailed in a petition to the minister that was submitted today.
Theeageesh said failure to provide full disclosure over the circumstances surrounding Ganapathy’s death would only bring the police and the ministry into disrepute.
Ganapathy was arrested on Feb 24. He passed away at the Selayang Hospital in Selangor on April 18. He leaves behind two children.
On March 11, his mother S Thanaletchumy lodged a police report claiming that the deceased’s leg had to be amputated due to the beating he allegedly received while in detention.
Thanaletchumy said Ganapathy was well during the time of his arrest, albeit with a history of diabetes and heart disease.
Meanwhile, Theeageesh said the government should reconsider its decision not to establish the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).
“The minister should consider the IPCMC so that it can handle cases such as this. We think it is very important that the police must be held accountable by a check and balance mechanism," he said.
The IPCMC bill was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat by the Pakatan Harapan administration, but withdrawn by the current Perikatan Nasional administration on Aug 19 last year.
Instead, the PN administration introduced an Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC) bill, which proposes a commission with significantly less powers.
