Zahid: Don't link Umno to PN govt's failure in Covid-19 battle

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it was unfair to link his party to the failure of the Perikatan Nasional government, including in the battle against Covid-19.
This was despite Umno being part of the ruling coalition.
"It is true that MPs from Umno are part of the PN government. But it does not mean that Umno is involved in determining the country's policies.
"Any decision is made by the PN government, including policies on the management of Covid-19 in the country.
"Setting the country's policy has been the PN government's absolute authority since the implementation of the emergency," Zahid (above) said in a Facebook post.
He added that people should not link Umno to the PN government's failure simply because a number of its MPs were eager to accept offers to be part of the PN government.
Zahid said even though Parliament had been suspended based on questionable reasons, Umno had continued to provide feedback to the PN government.
"Unfortunately most of our views and advice about Covid-19 do not get much attention," he said.
Apart from Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin who is the Bersatu president, the Covid-19 battle is primarily spearheaded by Umno ministers.
Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also the Umno vice-president, is the senior minister in charge of overseeing the enforcement of standard operating procedures against Covid-19.
Meanwhile, the Special Committee on Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV), which is in charge of the vaccination efforts, is led by two Umno ministers.
The committee is co-chaired by Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and Health Minister Adham Baba, both of whom are from Umno.
Public frustration has grown amid spiralling Covid-19 cases.
The country has seen multiple resurgences of the pandemic as the government prematurely lifted restrictions.
This week, 346 people died from Covid-19, the highest number of fatalities in any week since the start of the pandemic.
The number of cases also hit a new record high today, at 6,976.
