Sabah police have arrested a Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku Rakyat Sabah (Star) politician accused of molesting a pageant contestant.

Phillip Among, who has been suspended by the party, was arrested yesterday afternoon shortly after holding a press conference to deny the accusations against him.

Among had previously contested as a candidate for Star and was the Putatan parliamentary coordinator.

The Star newspaper cited Sabah police commissioner Hazani Ghazali as confirming that Among was being investigated after an Unduk Ngadau (Harvest Queen) contestant alleged he molested her in a car on May 19.

Police are investigating the case under Section 354 of the Penal Code for using criminal force to outrage a person’s modesty.

Unduk Ngadau is a cultural pageant held in conjunction with the Kaamatan harvest festival.

The allegations against Among surfaced on Wednesday, after which Star suspended him.

Prior to his arrest, Among announced at a press conference that he was suing the woman who accused him of molesting her.

He is also suing a Kadazandusun Cultural Association Sabah security guard who accused Among of assaulting him.
