The Pakatan Harapan presidential council has urged Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to “take responsibility” for today’s record-high Covid-19 cases and other failures, by tendering his immediate resignation.
It said that the lives and livelihood of the people must be saved.
“The people and the country should not experience such calamity just because of its failed government and prime minister, especially after the premier has lost the support of a majority of MPs and the legitimacy to hold the highest office," it said in a statement tonight.
The statement was jointly signed by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
Malaysia recorded 9,180 new Covid-19 cases today, which is a new record for the country. The number of patients requiring intensive care or ventilation also hit new records.
According to the Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the surge in the number of new cases is due to increased testing and contact tracing activities in areas that are under an enhanced movement control order (MCO) in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, as well as in factories.
Many individuals in the Klang Valley have also come forward for testing at private clinics after developing Covid-19 symptoms or becoming close contacts of known patients.
Meanwhile, the Harapan presidential council noted that Malaysia’s Covid-19 situation had worsened despite declaring a state of emergency on Jan 11, the third MCO on June 1, and the enhanced MCO in many places.
“Instead, confusing standard operating procedures, weak and selective enforcement, and permission for factories to operate despite being among the biggest contributors to Covid-19 clusters have brought about the failure to break the chain of infection.
“The people continue to suffer. Many have hoisted the white flag after losing their jobs or income. Too many have given up, and many have even killed themselves,” it said.
It warned that if the situation continues, a Bloomberg op-ed earlier claiming that Malaysia is becoming a “failed state”, could become a reality.
“This cannot be allowed to happen,” the council added.
