The trial of Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who is facing 47 criminal charges is likely to be delayed after he was admitted to hospital over back injuries.
During the proceeding at the High Court in Kuala Lumpur this morning, defence lawyer Hisyam Teh Poh Teik told the court that his client, Zahid, was unable to attend the trial as he needed to undergo a medical procedure at a private hospital.
The lawyer said Zahid had injured himself from a fall and would be in pain if he stays seated for too long.
“He has been under the care of the hospital since Sunday,” Hisyam was quoted as saying in court by local Malay newspaper Berita Harian.
Upon hearing what had happened, the prosecution team led by Raja Rozela Raja Toran told the court that her team would still like to proceed with its closing statement as there have been too many delays.
“The prosecution would like to recommend the court to call upon the doctor to provide a prognosis and explain Zahid’s condition,” Raja Rozela said.
High Court judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah then asked the defence team to call the doctor to appear in court for an explanation, but the defence lawyer said the doctor could not come today due to his work commitments.
The judge eventually issued a subpoena to Dr Mohd Shahir Anuar to appear in court tomorrow at 3.30pm.
Zahid, who is the former home minister, is facing 47 charges of criminal breach of trust (CBT), money laundering, and corruption during his tenure at the Home Ministry.
