Assistance sought as 14 children at care home infected with Covid-19

Fourteen children from a care home for disabled children in Petaling Jaya, Selangor are undergoing quarantine after they tested positive for Covid-19 on Aug 25.

The children, aged five to 16, have been isolated in a multipurpose hall within Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Taman Megah.

“Only the children have been tested positive and have been quarantined. The caretakers tested negative,” said centre volunteer Sity Viknendraa.

As such, the centre is seeking donations in the form of meals, vitamins and supplements for the quarantined children.

“At the moment, we really need vitamin C, panadol, and paracetamol syrup for kids.

“We would also appreciate it if anyone would like to provide meals for the children,” he said when contacted.

Donations can be made via channels stated on the centre’s website.

Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Taman Megah is a non-profit organisation that houses 105 residents.

He said all caretakers and occupants who are 18 years and above have been vaccinated.

Studies show that vaccinated individuals can still be infected or pass on the infection but may be asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms.

This means they can put unvaccinated individuals, who are likely to have a more severe illness from Covid-19 infection, at risk.

All residents at Kepong care home infected

The outbreak at the children's home comes weeks after all residents at an elder care home in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur were infected with Covid-19.

The director of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Amal Warga Emas Sejati Kuala Lumpur dan Selangor, also known as Fu Pin Handicap Centre, said all have since recovered and have been vaccinated.

However, the director, who only wants to be known as Tan, said there is still insufficient manpower and funding for supplies, such as disposable gloves, spray disinfectant and vitamin supplements.

Donations can be made to the institution’s Ambank account (8881041941687) while bank receipts can be forwarded to [email protected] if a donation receipt is required for tax deduction purposes.

Earlier, Malaysiakini reported children at a Kajang orphanage were left stranded after their caretaker died of Covid-19, while more than 60 residents, including babies at a shelter in Johor, were infected with Covid-19.
