Adolescents aged 12-17 to get Pfizer vaccines

The National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme will now be open to those aged 12 to 17.
According to the new Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force-Adolescents (CITF-A), the programme will involve the Comirnaty vaccine produced by Pfizer-BioNTech.
The goal is to administer one dose to 60 percent of those in this age group by November and fully vaccinate 80 percent before the school term begins next year.
Priority will be given to those who are facing national examinations and the frail.
The programme is open to all youths, including the homeless, those in detention, and foreigners.
All educational institutions are required to register on the new "Vaksin Anak Ku" website while parents are advised to register their children as dependents on the MySejahtera application.
CITF-A is headed by Deputy Health Minister Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali and he is assisted by the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry as well as other government agencies, including the Prison Department and the Immigration Department.
In June, China began administering the Sinovac vaccine to children from as early as three years old.
Several European countries such as Denmark, France and Spain have also begun vaccinating adolescents.
The UK's one-dose strategy involving the Pzifer-BioNTech vaccine for adolescents is set to be implemented soon.
In the US, the authorities are aware that there is a small risk of adverse effects when administering the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to adolescents, but the advantages far outweigh the risks.
