Former Malacca chief minister Idris Haron said he is considering joining Pakatan Harapan after he was expelled from Umno following an attempted coup.
Idris also appeared to be offering himself to be a chief minister candidate for the coalition in the upcoming state election.
"Being in the chief minister's seat is not like changing clothes. Because this new grouping has a background of diversity and the ability to specialise, it is not easy.
"But if they (Harapan) choose me, it may be because I fulfil the standard of quality that they hope for, not just to be bossed around and being a lackey," he said in a statement today.
"I am still independent after being sacked by Umno. Harapan is one option... let us wait and let this calamity be resolved first," he added.
The incumbent Sungai Udang assemblyperson had led three other state lawmakers in withdrawing support from the BN-led state government.
After meeting some initial resistance, he then later secured support from Harapan to form a new state government and even expressed a willingness to let the opposition coalition take the lead.
However, Idris' gambit backfired, when Malacca Governor Mohd Ali Rustam dissolved the state legislative assembly instead, paving the way for a snap election.
Since then, Idris has been photographed meeting with Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim.
Idris said in his statement that he would stand with anyone that upholds social justice.
When contacted, the former Umno leader indicated that he was also meeting with Putra president Ibrahim Ali.
Meanwhile, he also said in his statement that records of exco meetings would show that he was among the most vocal and outspoken in trying to keep the state government straight.
He also criticised the move to sack him from Umno, labelling it as selective prosecution.
He said Malacca Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh and deputy chief Mohamad Ali Mohamad would unlikely be facing any action despite going against Umno's "no Anwar, no DAP" mantra when the latter approached DAP to keep the state government from collapsing.
"I'm confident they will be safe from any action," he said.
