MALACCA POLLS | The DAP today announced its candidate line-up for the Malacca election which included two new faces, namely Muhamad Danish Zainudin and Leng Chau Yen.

Danish will have the difficult task of contesting in Pengkalan Batu where the party's incumbent assemblyperson Norhizam Hassan Baktee had defected.

Another notable development is that the DAP will be deploying its state chief Tey Kok Kiew to a significantly riskier seat in Bemban.

In the last general election, DAP only won Bemban with 45.4 percent of the votes in a three-cornered fight with MCA and PAS.

In contrast, Tey's incumbent seat of Bandar Hilir was won with 83.05 percent of the votes, considered as DAP's safest seat in the state.

Leng, DAP's sole woman candidate and newcomer, will stand in for Tey in Bandar Hilir.

The 37-year-old had served as Tey's political secretary and held various positions within Kota Melaka DAP, as well as Malacca DAP since 2014.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who unveiled the candidates in a virtual press conference at the DAP headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today, said Tey's move will be a challenge for the Malacca DAP chief.

The list of candidates is as follows:

N07 Gadek – G Saminathan

N15 Pengkalan Batu – Muhamad Danish Zainudin (new face)

N 16 Ayer Keroh - Kerk Chee Yee

N19 Kesidang – Allex Seah Shoo Chin

N20 Kota Laksamana - Low Chee Leong

N21 Duyong - Damian Yeo Shen Li

N22 Bandar Hilir – Leng Chau Yen (new face)

N24 Bemban – Tey Kok Kiew

The sole incumbent to be dropped is Bemban's Dr Wong Fort Pin.

Earlier today, Wong at a separate press conference in Malacca, acknowledged rumours about his fate.

"Even if I am not a candidate, I will continue to work towards ensuring Pakatan Harapan becomes the government.

"I will do everything in my power and I am also willing to make way for someone younger," he told journalists.

Wong, a general practitioner, said he had been "tested" as he was supposed to be fielded as a candidate in the 2013 election. However, he was dropped at the last minute but still stuck with the party.

Lim thanked Wong for his loyalty to the party.

Danish, 25, said in a statement that youths in Malacca will play an important role in determining the state's future administration, whether in the hands of a "failed government" or one that prioritises the people's interests.

The DAP Pengkalan Batu coordinator said his first 400 days in the position has led to encounters with many locals who voiced concerns over the future of their children who lost their jobs during the pandemic.

"Issues surrounding online teaching and learning, particularly among school-goers and university students, are also equally important because I met many household heads who cannot afford to purchase the required devices, risking the creation of a future community who are left behind," said the Malacca DAP Youth secretary.

DAP is the first among Harapan parties to announce its candidates ahead of nomination day on Nov 8. Polling will be held on Nov 20.
