Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s third special advisor – who will advise him on matters related to health – is still in the process of being appointed, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Special Functions) Abdul Latiff Ahmad.
Abdul Latiff said this in a written parliamentary reply dated Dec 1 in response to a question from Pejuang’s Kubang Pasu MP Amiruddin Hamzah.
Amiruddin had asked how many special advisors the prime minister has and their financial implications on the government.
“The advisors who are appointed are those who have network, experience, and expertise in the matters related to the scope of their duties, which can benefit the country’s developmental efforts in line with the Keluarga Malaysia concept,” the minister said in the reply.
Previously, in early November, Abdul Latiff (above) said Ismail Sabri has three special advisors who advise him on health, religion, as well as on law and human rights.
However, the minister did not identify the three advisors.
At the time, only the appointment of Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said as the law and human rights advisor was publicly known.
Towards the end of November, Kedah Umno chief Jamil Khir Baharom was revealed to have been appointed as Ismail Sabri’s religious advisor.
Abdul Latiff also said at the time that each special advisor’s office costs RM50,000, including their staff.
In a Facebook post today, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng criticised the prime minister for appointing so many special advisors.
He said there are already ministers in charge of the matters the advisors were appointed to advise the prime minister on.
“Are the ministers sleeping on the job?
“Maybe with the worst crisis of rising prices in history right now, Ismail Sabri can use this as an excuse to appoint an inflation advisor.
“He can consider firing the ministers who hold the same portfolio but are sleeping on the job. Their hefty salaries can be better used by distributing it to the rakyat,” Lim quipped.
