In a statement today, Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan, who did not name Ali, said party rules do not allow members to run for public office without permission.
"Disciplinary action can be taken, including expulsion. The rules apply to Sarawak and the party will make an announcement soon," he said.
He stressed that Bersatu members have been instructed by party president Muhyiddin Yassin to campaign for allies Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in the Sarawak legislative assembly election.
Ali, 52, is seeking a third term as the Krian assemblyperson.
He is facing greenhorns Musa Anak Dinggat (Parti Sarawak Bersatu), Danny Kuan (Parti Bumi Kenyalang) and Friday Anak Belik (GPS).
GPS and Bersatu are allies in Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's administration in Putrajaya.
