MACC to address ‘conflict of interest’ claims on Wednesday

The MACC is set to hold a "tell-all" press conference on Wednesday to explain allegations of conflict of interest involving its chief commissioner Azam Baki, according to a report.

“I am going to give a press conference this Wednesday, so it’s better for you to come so that I can tell the whole thing, not only to you but to everybody else who is concerned about this matter, okay?” MACC’s Anti-Corruption Advisory Board chairperson Abu Zahar Ujang (above) reportedly told The Vibes.

The portal said Azam, Zahar and Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel chairperson Borhan Dolah are expected to attend the press conference.

However, the report also noted that Zahar did not say whether he intends to address the media alongside Azam and Borhan.

When contacted, Zahar told Malaysiakini that the press conference will be held at 2.30pm on Wednesday.

This came after MACC’s Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel member Edmund Terence Gomez resigned last week in protest over the panel’s supposed inaction against the allegations that Azam owned close to two million shares in a public listed company.

Borhan had claimed that Gomez did not mention the alleged misconduct before, to which Gomez countered by saying he had sent at least five email attachments on the issue. 

The controversy also prompted politicians to call for independent investigations into the allegations, including members of the Parliamentary Special Select Committee for Agencies under the Prime Minister's Department who want the committee to summon Azam to testify.
