In a long statement today, the Islamist party’s Terengganu youth chapter secretary Muammar Qaddafi Mohd Nasir questioned if the compromise benefitted Pakatan Harapan or otherwise.
He noted that Amanah made the most sacrifice by giving Muda four winnable seats - Tenang, Bukit Kepong, Parit Raja and Puteri Wangsa.
“Two of which already had (designated) candidates who are important figures in Johor Amanah - who have had to face internal pressure and disputes over the leadership’s move to hand over these winnable seats,” he said.
Harapan component party DAP is making way for the three-month-old youth-based party in two seats - Machap and Bukit Permai.
Qaddafi questioned if it was worth sacrificing these chances when Muda was not a Harapan component party and would not be contesting under the Harapan logo.
He also pointed out that Muda may be popular online but was untested electorally.
“Muda does not appear ready to be seen as being in the same team as Harapan.
“They are merely peddling the idea of a united opposition. The idea only benefits Muda and brings harm to Harapan.
“Because if Muda is not welcome then Muda will only eat away at our vote share. This gives us no choice but to negotiate with them,” Qaddafi analysed.
The youth leader further questioned whether Amanah, DAP and Muda grassroots leaders will get along even if their top leaders do.
“Therefore, Muda has a huge burden to prove Amanah and DAP’s decision to make way for them will be mutually beneficial.
“Muda and (party president) Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman need to work harder to ensure the sacrifice of other parties (is worth it),” he challenged.
Muda’s electoral debut has also ruffled PKR’s feathers.
Johor PKR women’s chief Napsiah Khamis previously expressed annoyance at the party’s potential Puteri Wangsa candidate Amira Aisya Abd Aziz, which ignited a back-and-forth between the two parties.
PKR and Muda are presently engaged in seat negotiations.
Johor goes to the polls on March 12. Nomination day is on Feb 26.
