Yeoh: New committee a result of Rina Harun's failure

Former deputy minister Hannah Yeoh said that the newly announced special cabinet committee for protecting vulnerable groups was set up due to the failure of Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rina Harun.
“If a committee is needed for this, it shows that the minister (Rina) is not doing her job as protecting the vulnerable is part of the ministry’s job scope,” Yeoh told news portal Free Malaysia Today.
The Segambut MP served as deputy minister of the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry during the Pakatan Harapan administration.
Yesterday, in making the announcement, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said a committee was being set up to safeguard the welfare of vulnerable people, especially children, persons with disabilities, women and senior citizens.
He said the committee is chaired by him and has representatives from the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, Home Ministry, Education Ministry, Housing and Local Government Ministry, Health Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs).
He said the committee would ensure that all care centres are operated according to the procedure in line with the Care Centres Act 1993.
"At the same time, this committee will also look into the operations of religious educational institutions like tahfiz centres which are not registered and not managed properly,” he told reporters after visiting Down syndrome girl Bella at a welfare home under the supervision of the Social Welfare Department in Seremban.
Ismail Sabri said the committee would also look into issues related to non-possession of identification documents which could affect the future of the children involved.
“This committee will also study obsolete acts with a view to amending them. Studies will be done so that protection can be given,” he said.
Ismail Sabri said there are 1,898 care centres registered with the Social Welfare Department, with 1,255 being child care centres, 202 people with disabilities care centres, 383 senior citizens care centres and 10 women’s care centres.
He said the government had detected 1,025 care centres operating without the approval of the Social Welfare Department. Ismail Sabri added that the Social Welfare Department would also be restructured to make it more efficient.
