The Plantations and Commodities Ministry portfolio will be filled by another Bersatu leader once Zuraida Kamaruddin's exit from the party becomes official, said Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin.

He said the number of cabinet posts held by Bersatu had been agreed on between party president Muhyiddin Yassin and Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

"This means if Zuraida is dropped by Bersatu, her place will be taken up by another (leader) from Bersatu, as recommended by the party president to represent Bersatu in the cabinet,” Hamzah (above) was quoted as saying by Bernama.

Zuraida earlier today announced that she was quitting Bersatu to join Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM), and said she would be discussing her resignation from cabinet with Ismail Sabri.

Her prior alleged involvement in PBM had caused Bersatu to initiate a disciplinary probe against her.

This came as a large number of Zuraida's associates in and out of Bersatu had joined PBM.

Hamzah, who is the Bersatu secretary-general, said the Ampang MP had told the party in a letter on May 23 that she was not a member of PBM.

He said Bersatu will not be affected by Zuraida's exit.

"To me, she has been showing her true colours. She has not attended more than six meetings of the party,” Hamzah said.

Muhyiddin, in a statement posted on Facebook this evening, revealed that Zuraida’s party membership was revoked immediately when she had declared her exit from Bersatu earlier today - in reflection of Clause 10 of Bersatu’s constitution.

“I will be presenting a new name to be appointed as a cabinet member to the prime minister soon given that Zuraida’s position as a minister is a result of Bersatu’s quota,” said Muhyiddin.
