There is no special quota allocated for the recruitment of contract of service (COS) teachers for Grade DG41 Education Service Officer, according to Senior Education Minister Radzi Md Jidin.
He said, however, that priority is given to education majors.
“From the very beginning, the ministry stressed that the opportunity would be given to graduates of qualified education professions as they are trained to become teachers.
“If there are additional vacancies, they will be given to the graduates with no education majors,” he was quoted as saying by Astro Awani at a special press conference at the Education Ministry yesterday.
He was responding to allegations of the ambiguity surrounding the special one-off intake of teachers involving 18,702 Education Service Officers in grade DG41 to fill vacancies throughout the country.
It was alleged after the release of the COS interview, an original quota of 5,000 teachers for the intake had been reduced to 2,400.
Radzi however said that the figure was for shortlisted candidates submitted to the Public Service Department (JPA) to obtain a special certificate allowing them to be selected by the Education Services Commission (SPP).
“SPP would choose how many (candidates) are needed. No claims have been made that there was a quota of 4,000 non-education graduates,” he said.
The minister added that there were as many as 200 graduates qualified by SPP for the scheme that had yet to receive their letters from the University Senate.
“It is not fair if we neglect them because it is not their fault.
“Their recruitment has nothing to do with the COS (teachers) without education majors. We use other routes,” he said.
On May 5, Radzi was reported to have said that the fate of 2,600 COS teachers appointed in the June 2020 intake will be protected when their contracts were expected to be extended for two years.
