Its chief Ahmad Yahya (above) stated that the film, directed by Syamsul Yusof, has shown that films like these still have a place in the hearts of the public.
“Films have a strong influence and pull and can also frame the behaviour and emotions of the public. Films are also useful when trying to get a message across to the public.
“By bringing our independence figures to the silver screen, we can instil a spirit of identity in the hearts of the public.
“In fact, the power of religious knowledge intertwined with patriotism are important elements that are shown through these figures,” he said in a press statement today.
The Mat Kilau film has proven to be a success and has recorded over RM18 million worth of ticket sales just a few days after it hit the theatres.
Mat Kilau was a Malaysian freedom fighter who fought against the British in his birthplace of Pahang. He worked together with other nationalists such as Dato Bahaman, and Tok Janggut to begin the revolution against the British.
Role of religious figures
Ahmad said having a movie about Mat Kilau also helped highlight the role of religious figures in the struggle for independence.
“Additionally, the role Mat Kilau has alongside other ulama should be made a positive platform to show that the struggle to free the people was the brainchild of religious scholars until opposing colonisers became a primary concern before getting support by all groups,” he said.
Ahmad said the PAS ulama wing hoped that there will be future films on other freedom fighters such as Abdul Rahman Limbong, Tok Janggut, Maharaja Lela, Pandak Lam and others.
“We are confident that the creation of more films which highlight national freedom fighters, and the country’s history will give a good message to the public and should receive the support of all parties,” he added.
Ahmad said it was time for the country and the public to raise the image of these heroes, especially with the Merdeka celebrations looming.
