When contacted, Zakir’s counsel, Akberdin Abdul Kader, confirmed the outcome before judicial commissioner Mohd Arief Emran Arifin.
“The matter has been amicably out of court. The consent order was recorded before justice Mohd Arief this morning.
“The settlement terms are private and confidential,” the lawyer said when contacted this afternoon.
In regards to Zakir Naik’s lawsuits against several other politicians, Akberdin said currently, there are no settlement talks between the preacher and the other defendants.
Lawyer K Shanmuga, who acted for Ipoh Barat MP Kulasegaran, also confirmed the settlement between the plaintiff and the defendant.
“All that parties are allowed to say under the terms of the settlement is that a consent judgment was entered to amicably resolve the matter, where terms are confidential,” the counsel said.
In 2019, Zakir launched multiple defamation lawsuits not only against Kulasegaran but four other well-known political figures, namely Klang MP Charles Santiago, Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy, Bagan Dalam assemblyperson Satees Muniandy and former ambassador Dennis J Ignatius.
The legal actions were filed following Zakir’s alleged controversial remarks during a talk in Kelantan on Aug 8, 2019, while speaking about the peaceful spread of Islam in the Malay archipelago.
The settlement today is the first of the civil suits to achieve a settlement between the parties.
