Anti-death penalty advocate Sebaran Kasih has continued on its mission through song, releasing a third and latest single from behind bars, this time featuring veteran singer DJ Dave and music sensation Kidd Santhe.
Once again featuring lyrics by Pannir Selvam Pranthaman, a Malaysian on death row in Singapore’s Changi prison, ‘Pintu Besi’ looks at the complex feelings death row inmates go through as they await impending execution while seeking forgiveness and mercy.
Sebaran Kasih president Angelia Pranthaman, who is also Pannir’s younger sister, said the latest release is a continuation of the group’s efforts to raise awareness on his case as well as others on death row.
“We hope the meaningful messages by my brother and the beautiful voice and music by the amazing Kidd Santhe, DJ Dave, and Prince Jon will help raise awareness on the need to abolish the death penalty, which we believe is cruel and inhumane treatment.
“Now more than ever, we need more forgiveness and mercy in the hearts of everyone, and we hope we can collectively give death row inmates a second chance,” she said.
The latest production from Sebaran Kasih is supported by the European Union together with various international and local rights groups - Ensemble Contre La Peine De Mort, Anti Death Penalty Asia Network, Amnesty International Malaysia and Lawyers For Liberty - combining Pannir's lyrics with music by Kidd.
“When I first read the lyrics from Pannir, I was struck by how real and honest they were.
“So I’m excited to be a part of this project because it uses music to bring a positive, hopeful message of forgiveness and mercy,” said Kidd.
Sebaran Kasih also continues to tap into the Malay-music audience through its success in bringing in local legend DJ Dave, having previously worked with Santesh of 'Amalina' fame.
“My heart goes out to all death row inmates, unfairly placed there to face death.
“All of us, even those we look down on, deserve a second chance at redemption,” he added.
Also lending his voice to the track is Sebaran Kasih’s vice-chairperson Prince Jon, combining his gospel background with real-life experiences in jail.
‘Kitchen For Hope’
Meanwhile, the group also launched its “Kitchen for Hope” fundraiser aimed to provide financial assistance to families of death row inmates who have been orphaned, with their sole breadwinners jailed and sentenced to death.
The catering service targets small-to-medium events and uses the profits it generates to help these families and sustain its operations, according to Angelia.
Aside from highlighting his own plight through prose, Pannir had mourned other Malaysians on Singapore’s death row, including dedicating a poem for Nagaenthran Dharmalingam, who was executed in May.
