In veiled remarks, PAS rejects Muhyiddin's war on BN

The rift between Perikatan Nasional allies PAS and Bersatu appears to be widening, after the latter's president, Muhyiddin Yassin declared war on the Umno-led BN coalition.

In veiled remarks tonight, the party said it could not accept the stance of anyone who labelled a Malay-Muslim group as their "main enemy".

"This is especially in matters involving the position and power of Muslims in governing a country where the majority are Muslims such as Malaysia.

"Such remarks are unwise and awkward if the party labelled as the main enemy is a partner in a unity government," said PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan in a statement tonight.

He did not mention Muhyiddin in his remarks.

However, the remarks came days after Muhyiddin declared BN to be PN's main enemy in the 15th general election.

While the coalition chief said all PN parties agreed to this, it contradicts PAS' declaration that Pakatan Harapan was their ”real enemy” last week.

PAS and Umno

PAS has made it no secret that they are still trying to forge cooperation with Umno, with the former saying there was a strong chance for the duo's Muafakat Nasional pact to be revived.

Takiyuddin said tonight that PAS was confident that unity among Malay-Muslim parties would ensure stability and serve all Malaysians.

He also urged all PAS leaders and members to abide by instructions from the party's spiritual leader Hashim Jasin that all who want unity and stability in the country strive toward the agenda of uniting the ummah.

It is unclear where PAS and Umno are in terms of reconciliation.

While there are factions in both parties striving towards it, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been a major deterrent.

That said, any decision on cooperation would be made by Umno's supreme council, and not Zahid alone.
