Perak MB seeks dissolution, but sultan wants to think it over

The Perak state legislative assembly has not been dissolved as the state’s ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah is deliberating on the proposal, said Menteri Besar Saarani Mohamad.

According to Bernama, the proposal was presented to His Highness during the menteri besar’s audience with him at the Perak palace in Ipoh this morning.

“I have submitted the proposal for the sultan’s consideration in line with the state’s constitution.

“During the session, Sultan Nazrin said he took cognisance of the proposal and would deliberate on the matter,” said Saarani.

“Due to this, details regarding the dissolution of the state assembly will be announced after the sultan has made a decision,” he added.

However, Saarani was quick to describe the sultan’s stand as not unusual as it was the ruler’s prerogative to do so.

DAP’s Keranji assemblyperson Chong Zhemin had urged the menteri besar not to push for the dissolution until the anti-party hopping enactment is tabled and passed in the state assembly.

He said the bill must be prioritised to ensure the stability of the next state government, pointing out that an elected Perak government had been ousted twice in the past due to assemblypersons switching sides.

However, Saarani said holding a special sitting on the matter prior to the dissolution was not necessary at the moment.

“We can definitely table it after the general election,” he was quoted as saying by Malay Mail Online.
