PM: Toll charges on six Klang Valley highways to go down

Putrajaya will reduce the toll charges for six highways in the Klang Valley within the next three months.

The first phase (Oct 20) will involve Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (Akleh), Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE), Kemuning-Shah Alam Highway (LKSA), and Kajang Dispersal Link Expressway (Silk).

A second phase (Jan 1, 2023) will involve Kajang–Seremban Highway (Lekas) and Sungai Besi Expressway (Besraya).

Caretaker prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the cabinet decided on the matter on May 18 and June 1 respectively.

Ismail Sabri made the announcement during the launch of the Damansara-Shah Alam Highway (Dash) today.

In a statement, the Works Ministry said the new toll charges and extension to the concession period were still being finalised.

"Through the new restructuring, the government has saved around RM8.8 billion in form of compensation which was supposed to be paid to the concession companies.

"Moreover, road users will be able to enjoy lower toll charges to reduce the cost of living," said the ministry.

Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd (Prolintas) is the concessionaire for Akleh, GCE, LKSA, Silk and Dash. Prolintas is wholly owned by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), which in turn is owned by Putrajaya.

Public-listed IJN Corporation Bhd is the concessionaire for Lekas and Besraya.

In April, Putrajaya structured a deal to take over four Gamuda Bhd-linked highways Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas), Smart Tunnel, Sprint Highway, and the Damansara Puchong Expressway (LDP).

The move was designed to prevent toll charges from being raised until the end of the respective concession periods.

On the newly launched Dash, Ismail Sabri said road users can try out the highway toll-free for a month.

“I feel very proud when I see high-impact projects like Dash become a reality. This is because they are set to benefit Keluarga Malaysia.

“Dash is one of 53 high-impact projects in the government’s economic transformation programme, which offers 12,000 job opportunities," he said.

Toll rates have yet to be decided.
