Syed Saddiq's tweet on Deepavali break receives bouquets, brickbats

Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman's tweet, urging the Keluarga Malaysia government to consider extending the holiday for Deepavali this year to two days has received bouquets and brickbats from netizens.

The incumbent Muar MP had on Sunday, shared a screenshot of a text message sent to him by an unnamed student, lamenting about the one-day break for Deepavali, which falls next Monday (Oct 24).

In the message, the public university student had complained of not being able to celebrate the festival with the family due to the short leave, and having classes the next day. The student had hoped the youth leader would voice out on the matter so that relevant action can be taken.

Sharing the message, Syed Saddiq (above) said many students have reached out to him, voicing similar concerns.

"Break on Monday, and have to resume class the very next day.

"I want to suggest to Keluarga Malaysia (current government) to extend it further. Let it (the leave days) be the same as Hari Raya and Chinese New Year. Pity them," he had captioned them, referring to the Indian community.

Netizens reacted to the tweet by either agreeing with or jibing the young politician.

While many voiced similar concerns, others criticised him by asking why he did not bring the issue up when he was part of the Pakatan Harapan cabinet between 2018 and 2020.

Most of his critics accused him of capitalising on the issue now since the 15th general election is just around the corner.

There were also netizens who pointed out that the one-day Deepavali break had been around for years, across many administrations, and had never become an issue.

Some even suggested students skip lectures and get the notes from their fellow students later.
